Parity Mobile Design System

Company

Wireless, News UK

Role

UI Designer

Creating a consistent experience across all Wireless brands whilst streamlining the build of future features: saving time and money for the business & creating value for the listeners.

Background

-

Challenge & Opportunity

Project Parity was introduced to help our team at Wireless create consistency between brands.

At Wireless, our work spanned various distinct brands like TalkSport, Virgin Radio, and Times Radio, each with its unique branding requirements.

The objective was to unify all brands under a single design system, ensuring consistency while maintaining their distinct branding. This approach was also intended to facilitate the launching of new products, such as TalkTV.

The Parity design system was created utilising NewsKit, an open-source design system developed and used within News UK.

Responsibilities

I was brought on to the team as a Design System Advocate, working between design and developers to ensure our systems and processes were streamlined for launch.

Deliverables included a new and updated UI file for developer hand-off, a design library utilising our NK design system and pixel-perfect screens for launch.

Process

-

Design survey & creating a centralised library

I discovered the existing library was a local component library within the primary Parity file. This decentralised setup lacked a central hub for our Wireless Design system, which would become a challenge for branching out into new files or onboarding new brands.

To rectify this, I created a file as the centralised place for our new Wireless Design System and connected all components to the primary NewsKit Design system.

After securing the foundations, I relinked all pending screens with the new components in our Wireless Design Systems file.

Process

-

Refine & improve

Any issues encountered within the design system, whether at the NewsKit or Wireless component level, were brought to the attention of the NewsKit team.

This collaboration aimed to guarantee the robustness and longevity of the Wireless Design System.

Outcome

The outcome is a sustainable library accessible to the entire team, offering a single source of truth.

This not only streamlines the design team's workflow but also provides value to the business by reducing the time and cost involved in integrating new brands.

Additionally, it ensures a uniform experience across all Wireless brands for the audience.

TalkRadio

The new library enabled us to rapidly create and launch TalkRadio featuring Piers Morgan.

The Wireless library was crucial in developing TalkRadio into a Wireless app with a consistent experience.

The completed versions of the apps are now accessible for download on the app store.

Designing the app store previews for each brand was my concluding task at News UK, and you can view them below.
